RAEFORD, NORTH CAROLINA — You have to be careful what you post online; there’s always someone watching, scheming, and plotting your demise. That’s what’s reportedly happened to this middle school teacher.
According to ABC 7, West Hoke County Middle School teacher Kandice Mason was getting ready to start the school year, when someone shared her well-kept secret.
Apparently, Mason doesn’t post anything regarding the side hustle to her public Facebook account. So, the news upset her once she found out someone snatched an instructional video from her private account and alerted Hoke County Public Schools.
The source reports Mason was suspended from her position as teacher once the school was made aware of the situation.
As one who loves to teach, Mason said she was really looking forward to meeting her sixth graders and had already been given her classroom.
Kandice Mason also, reportedly, has a passion for learning and takes education quite seriously. Although she’s a single mother of two, Mason actually has three degrees.
ABC 7 notes that she has a masters in psychology, bachelors in English, and a certificate in phlebotomy.
‘THAT’S HOW I…EXPRESS MYSELF’
According to the source, Mason is a self-taught pole dancer. Essentially, aside from teaching others the art, she uses the exercise to unwind in her home after work. She tells the source as follows.
“That’s how I stay in shape. That’s how I feel like I can express myself and have time for myself…I’ve worked so hard to try and make sure I can provide for my daughters and our livelihood to have it jeopardized just for doing something that I’m passionate about.”
The source mentions that Hoke County Public Schools hasn’t detailed why Mason was suspended. Instead, a representative for the school system — Donna Thomas — has only stated that Mason has been “suspended with pay pending an investigation.”
Yet, ABC 7 says Mason told them she allegedly violated one of the school’s policies. Holding back tears, Kandice shared the alleged violation with the source. It reads as follows.
“As role models for the school system, students, however, employees are responsible for their public conduct — even when they are not performing their job duties as employees of the school system.”
According to the teacher, she doesn’t believe it was a parent or student who contacted the school board about her other occupation.
“It was someone…being malicious and pretty much trying to make me out to be a bad person,” Mason told the source.
However, she wants everyone to know she’s not that kind of individual at all.
“I’ve never felt ashamed of pole dancing,” Kandice notes. “It’s just an art for me. I just don’t see it as negative.”
Regardless, the teacher’s case could go in front of the Board; accordingly, they have the final say-so concerning her employment with Hoke County Public Schools.
Nevertheless, there are people on her side and fighting for her reinstatement. A petition started in her honor and defense; it’s titled “Justice for Kandice Mason!”
